What is a Banner Exchange?

A way for site owners to trade banners, or site advertisements, with owners of other sites at no cost. Every site in the GL Banner Exchange advertises on every other site by including an HTML Banner code on their pages for the GL-BE banner.

Who can join?

Anyone who runs a website that is related to GLASS. There is no minimum traffic or site size requirement. There is no fee for joining, and you will not be paid. GL-BE is a FREE service for everyone. We reserve the right to determine who may or may not join GL-BE based on our own personal feelings of appropriateness. However, there are no rules against commercial sites, or shop sites.

How do I join?

First create a GIF image of these exact measurements: 400x40 pixels and no more then 10k in size. Then place this image on your server so we can access it. When you have created your banner Fill out our form to join. Place the HTML Banner code on your page. Your site will be visited to verify that the banner is there. If it is there then you will be added to the system.

What if I don't know how to create banner?

No need to worry! We have a page full of talented people who have volunteered as Banner Creators. Most of them will create a banner for you for free, while others charge a small fee.

If you want to try and create one yourself, visit our Banner Utilities page for some shareware and freeware downloads that you can use to create your own banner (even animated!)

How do I make my own banner?

You will need a program that can edit image files - we have some listed on our Banner Utilities that you can download. If you decide to use another program, remember that you must be able to save (or convert to) GIF format, and the dimensions of the banner should be 400x40.

How do I make an animated banner?

You will need a program that can create animated GIF files - we have some listed on our Banner Utilities page. Basically, you create a series of images, and then use the software to assemble them into one GIF that can be 'played' back at a rate you choose. Once you have a GIF animation tool, it is best to get a few animated GIFs of different sizes, load them up in your animation software, and see how they work.

How should I format my banner?

Banner ads, including animated, must be 400 x 40, in GIF format, and less than 10K. (remember, the smaller the ad, the faster it will display)

We have easy to understand reports for you to view, outlining the activity of your site and banner. The reports are current and accessible anytime via the Members page; enter your account name and password, then click the Review Single Advert or Group button. Click on View Daily Stats or View IP Address Log.

You will also have 24hr real time stats. These stats include:

  • Exposures: How many times your banner has been displayed.
  • Clicks: How many click-throughs your banner has had.
  • Ratio: Average number of banners displayed for 1 click-through.
  • Percentage: Percentage of click-throughs on exposed banners.
  • IP Log: Ip Addresses for those who have either viewed or clicked on your banner.
  • Daily Stats: Daily stats for your account.
  • Monthly Stats: Monthly stats for yur account.
  • Overall Stats: Overall stats for your account.
  • Edit: Edit your account including banners and site url.

So what do you need to get started? You are going to need 2 things, a website and a banner. Chances are you already have a website, otherwise you probably wouldn't be here. If you don't have a banner, they are very easy to make. You'll need a graphics program. I use Paint Shop Pro, but there are many programs out there. You can find free shareware graphics programs at Shareware.com.

Now let's go over a few rules associated with this exchange.

  1. Adult sites are not allowed.
  2. Banners have to be less than 10k. Banners larger than this take too long to load. Your banner won't get as many exposures because people won't wait for it to load.
  3. Banners need to be standard size (400 x 40).
  4. You can't use programs to inflate the number of exposures. While this is a good way of getting more exposures, you are cheating everyone else. I will delete your account if you should do this.
  5. You must not put the code in a hidden frame.
  6. Banners must load in full view.
  7. When your banner is clicked on, it must go to a page that has the banner code on it.
  8. Do not make a banner exchange page that loads multiple banner exchanges. This creates a negative feeling about your page anyway.
  9. Failure to follow these rules will result in the deletion of your account.

Can I display banners on more than one page?

Yes, but you can only have one 'GL Banner Exchange' banner per page. By adding a 'page number' to the HTML ((NonSSI&page=22") or (NonSSI&page=X1")) you can get unique credit for banners displayed on unique pages.

Can I display multiple banner ads on one page?

Yes and No. Yes, you can display multiple banner ads on one page if the other ads are from other agencies or networks. However, you cannot display two or more 'GL Banner Exchange' banners on a single page.

Please note: Any pages contained within a framed page, all count as one page. So if you are using frames on your web site and "page1.html" and "page2.html" are both displayed on the screen at the same time due to the use of frames, there can be only one 'GL Banner Exchange' banner between them. Either "page1.html" gets the banner or "page2.html" gets the banner, but not both.

Does it matter where I place the banner ad on my site?

YES! Banner Placement MUST be in the First Screenfull at the size; 400 x 40. To ensure your own banner GIF appears in the first Screen of other members' web page(s), you must place the 'GL Banner Exchange' code within the first 480 pixels of your web page. This applies to all pages you add this banner code to.

There are several web-sites that want to use the banner but don't want to place it on the "First Screenfull"
First Screenfull ~ Display Ratio 1 to 1
Anywhere on the page ~ Display Ratio 2 to 1
