An interview with
Harold J. Hacker
Glass Line: June/July, 1987 - Vol. 1 No. 1

When a young lad can earn more then his school teacher, his parents are hard pressed to keep him in school. Such was the case with Harold James Hacker, one of today's lamp-glass artists, whom you may have seen at work at Knott's Berry Farm in California.
Mr. Hacker was born June 1, 1906, at Weston, West Virginia. His parents, Brent and Flora Hacker, had no argument to combat Harold's desire at the end of six years of schooling to "earn more than my schoolteacher." At the time all the glassware was made by hand, and glassblowing was one of the highest paying professions. Today's rapidly changing technology has pushed aside these craftsman, Only a few of these artists are working today.
