A Glass Menagerie: The Glass Marine Animals of Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka (Carrie Call Breese, Cornell University) As a child I had a thing for glass animals. On a special shelf in my room I had a collection lined up, creatures brought home from various trip and excursions. A sampling included a clear glass swan from a trip to Corning (with a ridiculously long neck), a green elephant with its trunk raised, a pale blue whale (a favorite) and of course, the ubiquitous bluebird of paradise. Touristy gift shops were always a favorite place, and I would invariably search out the glass animal exhibit, staring in wonder. What was it about glass animals? Like most children, I loved animals
